Let's Empower Alabama

Empower Alabama opened their Birmingham location last week with an office supply donation party. Their new home, located at 2926 Central Ave. in Homewood, is just a stone’s throw from Homewood Park and the perfect place to get them geared up for a number of events this month!

Check out a couple pictures from the opening: http://www.empoweralabama.org/blog/post/they_dug_our_new_digs

On July 26 at Noon, Empower Alabama is hosting “Cell Phone Saturdays”—a phone drive to encourage Birmingham’s youth to register to vote! There will be two shifts (from 12-2 p.m., and 2-4 p.m.) at the Empower Alabama Headquarters in Homewood.

On July 31, Empower Alabama is co-hosting a voter registration kick-off party with Catalyst and Greater Birmingham Ministries from 8 p.m. – 12 a.m. at Workplay Soundstage. That evening, they will be registering voters AND using their voter file (via laptops) to see if attendees' voter registrations are up-to-date.

Drinks begin at 5:30 p.m.

Music by Kid’s got the Vote, Dj Charles III and Nastique begins at 7:30 p.m.

To check out their other upcoming events, visit the Action Center (http://www.empoweralabama.org/action_center) as well as the new Front Door Democracy Web site (www.frontdoordemocracy.com). Be sure to send a shoutout to their office hamsters (Justice and Freedom), whose blog will be up soon!

And of course, you can find Empower Alabama on Facebook, Myspace and Linkedin, because they are just so hip.

You were probably there----

The Chamber of Commerce hosted the second annual YP Expo June 26th, 2008 at the Birmingham Museum of art.

But you probably already know that.

Over 700 Young Professionals came out for the event, where 36 civic organizations had information regarding their groups.

With so much YP interest (and not enough space!) it reminds Birmingham that Young Professionals are a group with a lot of potential. Potential for good, potential for civic engagement, and potential for reformation in Birmingham.

Give us an inch, and we will give back a mile.

The United Way perhaps said it best: http://livingunited.org/2008/06/30/wont-you-be-my-yp-neighbor/

and CBS thought we dressed well:
