Art After Dark in the Vineyard

The Junior Patrons of the Birmingham Museum of Art are partnering with Morgan Creek Vineyards on June 6th to bring you the most exclusive access to an evening of art, music, fireworks, and wine tasting.

These Special Tickets are $20 and include: admission, chartered transportation to the event, boxed gourmet dinner, art show, access to the Junior Patron VIP area, wine tastings, tours of the Vineyard, fireworks display, and live music by Marc Harris.

Participating artists include Ruth Yarbrough, Les Yarbrough, Libby Wright, and Mary Jean Henke from Artists Incorporated; Donna Branch from Galerie Allegria; and Dori DeCamillis and Scott Bennett from The Red Dot Gallery.

They will meet at the Bruno's parking lot at the Summit at 5:00 pm for the 30 minute ride to Morgan Creek.

Black Out!

American Cancer Society’s Junior Executive Board are organizing a Black-Out Cancer Party, set for June 12^th at the Wine Loft downtown, from 8pm – 11pm. Attendees are asked to wear all black.

The event will feature music from the Undergrounders and free wine, beer, and food. Tickets are on sale for $35 each at various stores across the Birmingham area, including: the three Birmingham area locations of Banana Republic, Etc. at Mountain Brook Village, Harrison Limited, Homewood Valley Cleaners, Ivory & White, Manhattan South, Mobley & Sons, Private Gallery, Shaia’s, and The Pants Store.

Anyone taking part in the Black-Out Cancer event is invited to an after party at Nana Funks in the Lakeview District. Nana Funks will be donating the cover charges to the American Cancer Society. There will also be special drink prices in support of the cause.

Proceeds from both events will go to the American Cancer Society for cancer research, education programs, advocacy efforts, and patient support.

Yesterday, the Alabama State Senate passed HR 373, or the Gourmet Beer bill. Pushed by the advocacy group Free the Hops, this bill has seen an uphill battle since it's inception two years ago. Now, it's passed in both the House and the Senate--- and all it needs is Governor Riley's signature to become law.

Sweeny Todd promises to be a musical thriller!

Red Mountain Theatre Company’s Sweeney Todd opens Thursday, April 30 and is offering tickets to their YP Night at a discounted rate to Birmingham’s young professionals.

This Stephen Sondheim musical was brought to recent headlines when Johnny Depp portrayed the slasher-lead in the 2007 Tim Burton film, opposite Helena Bonham Carter. However, in RMTC’s Cabaret Theatre, this musical, with Abe Reybold as Sweeney Todd, promises to be a “bloody good show”

YP Night at Sweeney Todd is May 1, and will feature discounted tickets and special drink offers. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the show starts at 7:30 p.m.

Caffeine Fix

One of my New Years Resolutions is to quit drinking sodas, so I expect coffee will soon become a more integral part of my life. A Year in Review…..

I know that EVERYONE does ‘year in review’ articles, blogs, etc., at this time of year, but I find it particularly fitting as this New Year’s Day marks a lot of big changes in my life: my first year in Birmingham, my first year out of grad school, my first year working at the Birmingham Regional Chamber of Commerce, and my first year as an avid event attendee. Here are the events and Birmingham happenings that I won’t be missing in 2009:

Magic City Art Connection (April)

This festival in Linn Park is great because it can serve as a lunch break distraction on Friday, or an all day exploration on Saturday with friends. I love festivals, art, food, and friends, and this mixes all of those passions brilliantly.

Birmingham Barons Games (April- August)

When I imagine my Spring and Summer of 2008, I automatically think of the Birmingham Barons Games and Thirsty Thursdays. Beer, friends, pretzels and spring air—how can one go wrong?

Do Dah Day (May)

While I do not have a dog, I love this May celebration because I can vicariously be a dog owner while listening to good music in Highland Park.

City Stages (June)

I was exposed to some of my favorite musical acts at City Stages 2008, both old and new. From Marc Broussard (whom I have loved since 2002) to Ingrid Michaelson (a new favorite), this festival is known for attracting the newest and hottest talent about to trail blaze the music industry.

YP Expo(June)

While it may be a shameless plug, I genuinely enjoyed getting to see so many young professionals in one place getting involved and having a good time at the Birmingham Museum of Art. Seven hundred YPs attended the 2008 Expo—what will next year bring?

Holiday Parties (December)

While the holidays can be hectic, I think that it is genuinely beneficial to attend as many December socials as possible. Beginning my job in the 2007 holiday season allowed me to meet and socialize with many peers I would work with professionally over the year, and in 2008, I found going to as many events as possible really got me into the holiday spirit.

New Year's Rockin' Eve

While I am often a Holiday fanatic, New Year’s Eve is not my cup of tea. It seems no matter the planning, hard work, or high hopes one has for the evening; it is almost always a let down. From trying to get all your friends together, to not knowing the “New Years Eve” cover charges at your usual favorite spots, it’s just a hassle. All the same—if you are looking for fun activities to ring in 2009, here is a list of some events going on in the Magic City. Did I leave one off? Post it as a comment!

● Naughty New Years Eve, at the Downtown Birmingham Sheraton Hotel, promises to have five hours of open bar, a late night breakfast, 3 Rooms of Entertainment, 2 DJ’s and Birmingham’s biggest balloon drop with party favors. Tickets are $150-$200.
● The Alabama Symphony Orchestra New Year's Eve Concert at Alabama Theater, Birmingham, AL will feature Christopher Confessore. This one-night-only, sell-out event boasts an exciting program of Strauss Family waltzes complete with a champagne toast, holiday masks and the ever-popular balloon drop. Tickets are on sale at the door only.
● The Stardome will host “New Year's Eve W/ Hicks Gone Wild”. These comics are both from small towns in Tennessee where the word "hick" is nowhere close to being redneck. Tickets are $40 for the 7:30 p.m. show and for the $75 for the 9:45 p.m. show.
● The Hats and Horns Society will host their 7th annual event New Years Eve Party at B&A Warehouse. Proceeds will benefit The Bell Center, The Junior League of Birmingham/Dollywood Imagination Library and the Alabama Child Caring Foundation . Partygoers will enjoy a dinner buffet, a silent auction, an open bar with midnight champagne toast and music by Mother Mercy and Hashbrown. Dress code is cocktail Attire with black tie optional. Tickets are $100 in advance (online only) $150 at the door (if available).
● Trotline will be playing a New Year's Eve Show at Zydeco from 10:00 p.m. until 2 a.m.. Tickets are $15.00.
● The Nick will be featuring Heath Green, Jezebel Dogs and Little Blue Flame at 10:00 p.m Tickets are $8.00.
● New Year's Swingin' Eve Dance will be from 9:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. at the Pelham Civic Center, hosted by the Birmingham Swing Dancers. Featuring the Clay Swafford Band, admission to this swingin’ time is $40 per person
● Workplay will be hosting “A Special New Years Eve Celebration With Salsabor - Latin Dance Night.” Free dance lessons start at 9 p.m. and the dancing starts at 10 p.m.. Tickets are $25 and may only be purchased the night of show.
● The Rare Martini will be featuring both the band Five-O and a three course dinner for New Years Eve. Cover is $15 before 9 p.m. and $20 after 9 p.m.
● Speakeasy will be hosting The Spots. Cover is $15, which includes free champagne!

Community Foundation

The Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham gathered leaders from across greater Birmingham on Nov. 19 at WorkPlay to share great ideas about what things to keep and what to change to make our community’s future even brighter. More than 100 visionary individuals wrote their ideas on cards or had the chance to use one of the available laptops to input their ideas on line at foundationbirmingham.org/imagine.

The event was full of energy and enthusiasm, thanks to great stories from Community Foundation Board Chair Eddie Friend and President Kate Nielsen about what extraordinary people have done and are still doing through the Community Foundation. As a leader in transforming our community, the Community Foundation recently helped to create more green space through the Three Parks Initiative and to strengthen Birmingham City Schools through Yes We Can! Birmingham. Brooke and Bob Battle told their own stories about why they are involved in building new resources to build a brighter future and what they imagine we can accomplish together.

Alternative Thanksgivings

● Veranda on Highland is offering a special Thanksgiving day menu, with both traditional turkey and dressing and other New Orleans-style options. Call (205) 939-5551.

● The Wynfrey Hotel at the Riverchase Galleria has a Thanksgiving brunch. No traditional turkey and dressing, but everything from seafood to chicken to roast pork loin, a sweet potato bar, breakfast foods, salads, desserts and more. Reservations are required, (205) 444-5706.

Blazer Pride!

Dr. Carol Garrison, President of the University of Alabama at Birmingham, graciously invited the YP Roundtable to her end of the season football tailgate Saturday, Nov 22. It was perfect weather for cider and hot chocolate and as the party eventually moved to the Club level of Legion Field, I was appreciative to have a home football team.

While I might have graduated from another university, there is nothing like sipping a hot drink under a tent with friends on a Saturday afternoon, eagerly anticipating kickoff. While we lament that we often have to drive to see musical acts or plays, the act of tailgating is something that we have in Birmingham’s own backyard. Furthermore, as a Birmingham outsider, I find it difficult to attach myself to a local high school team to cheer for. Contrastingly, UAB is an undeniable force tying this region together, not to mention the number one employer in Alabama. It’s easy to get on board for a school does such great thing for our community.

While the University of Alabama in Birmingham’s home football season is over, don’t fret--- that just means basketball is here. Go Blazers!

Young Professionals Help Girls Set Goals

The Leadership Circle, a group of young professionals who support the Girl Scouts of North-Central Alabama, will be hosting a Career Development Workshop for girls in Birmingham’s inner-city troops on Saturday, November 1^st from 9 AM-Noon at the YMCA Youth Center.

The workshop will consist of 6 stations (3 for Brownies and 3 for Juniors) hosting up to 90 girls, and each station will have a speaker and an activity in which the girls will complete to earn badge. Speakers will talk about their field, and what goals they had to set for themselves to get into their field, and talk about what the girls can be doing NOW to reach their career goals.

Stations will include Computer Science station, where girls will learn how to take a part a computer and learn the inner-workings of it, and then put it back together to see how all pieces work in unison. Also, the Financial station will teach girls how to comparison shop for the best deal to make the most of their budget.

Founded in 2008, the Leadership Circle consists of 30 young professionals, ages 25-35, who support the Urban Initiatives of the Girl Scouts of North-Central Alabama through service and fundraising.

Musings on Conferences and Traveling

This week, you might have noticed the lack of posts. I have been at a conference since last Monday (and traveling a little on the side), which—alas—leads to a lack of material regarding Birmingham, specifically. However, if you do not travel frequently or go to work related conferences, here are a few things I learned along the way:

1) Take a bus tour, especially if you don’t have a lot of time in a mid-sized city. You can get everything out of the way in 90 minutes. It’s fantastic, and the $20 is definitely worth the attention I was able to give my work later on.

2) Don’t be that guy (or girl). Show some respect to your speakers, even if you don’t agree with them.

3) Make friends. Cities are particularly less intimidating when you have someone to disperse that anxiety with. That doesn’t mean getting trashed at every opportunity (side note: I actually heard of a company—in Birmingham, nonetheless—that sent their employees to training in order to see who would party too much. Those employees were promptly fired. The lesson? Watch the booze, kids).

4) Bring one suit—mix and match. You will need that luggage space for the 8,000 pieces of literature your boss wants you to bring back. Also—bring a pair of jeans. And a scarf. You will find somewhere to wear them both.

5) Take lots of notes.

6) You have to be at the airport one hour before your flight. Delta will not let you on a flight without your checked luggage on board, and the Philadelphia Airport is not a comfy place to campout.

7) Make sure you bring a comfortable pair of shoes. Just because your flats are 'broken in' in Birmingham does not mean they are comfortable in New York. FYI.

Last week, the Birmingham Museum of Art’s Jr. Patrons hosted another lovely event at the Museum, complete with wine tasting and glorious after work weather in the sculpture garden. However, this social gathering centered around an exhibition that no other museum in America has experienced in it’s entirety-- Leonardo da Vinci: Drawings from the Biblioteca Reale in Turin.

Birmingham natives have until November 9^th to experience this showcase, which features da Vinci’s celebrated notebook Codex on the Flight of Birds. The best part? Thanks to various sponsors and partnerships, the exhibit is free of charge. Anyone who works downtown can take their lunch break to visit a great display by one of the best art museums in the country with little or no hassle—and I urge you to. No one should miss the opportunity to view da Vinci’s work in their own backyard!

Note: the viewing area has to be kept at below normal temperatures to preserve the pieces, so bring a sweater; magnifying glasses are provided.

Friends of the Railroad Reservation District have extended an invitation to all the Young Professionals in the region to their Neighborhood Party next week-- Thursday Oct. 16, 2008, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. There will be free drinks, food, and live music, as well as information about this exciting downtown revitalization project!

FORRD has risen over $26 million dollars for the project, which will include an amphitheatre, open lawn, walking trails, lake, and shaded pavilions. The projected completion date is roughly October of 2009—so Crawfish Boil 2010 will certainly be a great party!

Perusing AL.com this morning I found a blog post announcing Homewood’s very own Oktoberfest celebration this weekend—Saturday, Oct. 11, 2008 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Why has no one mentioned this!?!?!

While beer may not be my drink of choice, I think it’s a pretty cool opportunity (AND all proceeds benefit the United Way Food Bank!). Considering Cullman’s Oktoberfest it dry, this might be a great fall opportunity (especially for all the ‘Bama fans that don’t have a UA game to watch this weekend).

Furthermore, Birmingham’s has been host to an Oktoberfest celebration ranked in the “Top 20 Events in the Southeast” four times! The FDSK (Freunde Deutscher Sprache und Kultur) has hosted a traditional Bavarian-style Oktoberfest in downtown Birmingham annually since 1969. Oktoberfest 2008 will be held at the FDSK German Culture Club on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 10-11, 2008 from 5 p.m. to midnight.

Over the last 10 months, Americans have experienced an avalanche of information and stories regarding the 2008 Presidential Election. While I wouldn’t dream of writing a blatant political post, I did experience my first bout with being a transient young professional—changing my voter registration information for the first time.

It’s actually quite easy; you can both register to vote and change your voter registration information at the City Courthouse or any of the Satellite offices around town without even waiting in line or using a stamp!

However, my real reason for posting is all the questions I had after re-registering: Where do I go to vote? What time can I go? All questions people new to the area like transient young professionals might encounter. I found http://www.vote411.org-- a great resource for all voting information, from where to when and they even link you to maps so you can plan your own Election Day commute. My favorite tool? A sample ballot so you know exactly what offices you will be voting for next month.

Now you cannot plead ignorance. Go vote!

First Fridays!

This weekend, Alabama becomes (along with

Georgia

) the site of the nation’s longest paved bicycle trail with the long awaited connecting of the Chief Ladiga and Silver Comet rails-to-trails systems, thereby connecting Anniston to Atlanta. In case you didn’t know, the ‘rails-to-trails’ concept takes abandoned railroad tracks and turns them into walking or paved bicycle trails for public use.

Although ending in Anniston, the completion of this trail is a neat opportunity for Birminghamians as well. Imagine biking through the Appalachians as the leaves change color this fall—without any traffic interruption or concerns. Birmingham already ranks at the top of the nation in Greenspace opportunities (Oak Mountain State Park, Red Mountain Park, Railroad Reservation District, Ruffner Mountain Nature Center—just to name a few), and now you only have to drive a few minutes to be able to enjoy this fantastic recreational biking opportunity.

This Halloween, Empower Alabama, Catalyst, and Greater Birmingham Ministries are teaming up for one last push to increase voter turnout this election. On October 31^st, volunteers are dressing up and canvassing the region to encourage Birmingham residents to vote. This is a pretty cool approach since 1) people are more likely to answer their doors on Halloween and 2) it is 4 days before the 2008 presidential election. Some studies show that although more taxing on resources, time and volunteers, face to face contact is the best way to encourage voters to exercise their right.

Afterwards, volunteers are invited to attend the Ghouls and Goblins Gala at the McWane Center.

Volunteers will meet up at the McWane center from 4-7 and canvass from 5-8.

The Birmingham Botanical Gardens is hosting a series of YP social events this fall. Head over to the Botanical Gardens September 4, October 23 and November 13 from 5 p.m. – 9 p.m in the Hill Garden to check out the region’s young professional scene and sample food from A Social Affair. Each evening event will include specialty themed hors d'oeuvres paired with signature drinks as well as a cash bar, wine, beer and live music.

The Best of the Redneck Riviera

In the name of research, I took a tour of the big beaches of the Emerald Coast (aka the Redneck Riviera, or the stretch of land between Mobile and Apalachicola) this summer. After countless hours of investigation, I have compiled a list of my favorite things about the southern beachfront, in case you have a spare weekend to take advantage of discounted fall prices this year!
Destin
Destin is always a family destination for me, but if you are there with friends, make sure you check out the nightlife at the Village of Baytowne Wharf, which has a variety of restaurants and bars that can please everyone. I always stop by Rum Runners, a favorite party spot with a lot of southern flair. Be prepared to hear college fight songs.
Also, head over to Seaside for the day to peruse the site of “The Truman Show” and get a shaved ice. The town is as picturesque as the film portrays, and the locals are used to tourists—but treat you as family. On your way back to Destin, stop at the Red Bar and Piccolo Grill. This spot in Grayton Beach is rather inexpensive for the beach ($15 a plate), but the best quality you will get anywhere. Menus are posted on chalkboards; you will only have five options. But the five options will all be amazing—we sometimes stop here twice in a week-long vacation.
Panama City
When one thinks of Panama City, you immediately think of screaming teenagers on Spring Break. Not entirely true anymore (although I would probably steer clear of the city from March through April, just in case). The town has been ‘cleaned up’ significantly in the last year or so, but young professionals can still take advantage of the great deals in PCB.
My favorite spot, however cliché, was Margaritaville. Jimmy Buffet’s signature restaurant is camp for sure, but still a great time. Make sure you get a classic margarita and a “Cheeseburger in Paradise.” Watch out for when the song ‘Margaritaville’ comes on—there is a complete show involved!
Gulf Shores
Upon arriving in Gulf Shores on a late Friday evening, I was immediately whisked away to the Flora Bama, the Gulf Coast’s most well known night spot. While many assume it was wiped out due to Hurricane Ivan, the bar is still thriving (bigger and better than ever, according to some reports). There is no roof—just a tent covering; I would equate it to a shack on steroids. However, the group is diverse: from college age kids, to local adults, and a variety of Naval officers and enlisted men and women at the Naval Air Station in Pensacola. The music is always live, and on a fall night, I would liken this place to heaven.
Also—Stop by Jimmy Buffet’s sister Lucy’s restaurant, Lulu’s, and get the redneck caviar and a Loopty-Lu (a hard lemonade with a fun straw). This place is bright, breezy, and laid back—I would expect nothing else from a Buffet.

Last Tuesday, Birmingham found out who the IN crowd is — and got to sample some local flavor at the IN Campaign Party announcing the restaurants, attractions and places Birmingham residents designated as IN spots. In conjunction with the Birmingham Convention & Visitors Bureau, and with the help of Big Communications, the Birmingham Regional Chamber of Commerce ended the campaign with a bang at Vulcan Park & Museum. There was a sampling of food and drinks from The Olive Branch, Rojo, Cocina Superior, Bonedaddys, Catering by LaNetta, The J Clyde, Cosmos Pizza, GianMarcos, Urban Standard, and The Bottletree, so guests were able to sample generously from the best of Birmingham. Steppers and Walkers sent instructors to teach locals the hottest dance moves, and Ona Watson & Champagne performed throughout the night. Thunder and lightning threatened the start of the party, but it didn’t deter guests. Everyone was glad to be IN BirmINgham.

Empower Alabama opened their Birmingham location last week with an office supply donation party. Their new home, located at 2926 Central Ave. in Homewood, is just a stone’s throw from Homewood Park and the perfect place to get them geared up for a number of events this month!

The Chamber of Commerce hosted the second annual YP Expo June 26th, 2008 at the Birmingham Museum of art.

But you probably already know that.

Over 700 Young Professionals came out for the event, where 36 civic organizations had information regarding their groups.

With so much YP interest (and not enough space!) it reminds Birmingham that Young Professionals are a group with a lot of potential. Potential for good, potential for civic engagement, and potential for reformation in Birmingham.

This Thursday is the second annual YP Expo-- a networking and socializing event for young professionals sponsored by the Birmingham Regional Chamber of Commerce. Last year, over 550 YP's came out for the event-- more than anyone could have expected. This year, it's going to be bigger and better: more YP civic organizations, more invitees, more space, and (hopefully) more fun!
The great thing about the Expo is that it not only gives young professionals a chance to socialize in these lazy summer months, but also get involved in the civic scene. Right now, there are 30 YP groups signed up to exhibit-- there is a group for everyone to join, whatever your flavor. So come out on Thursday, June 26th from 5:30-9 PM at the Birmingham Museum of Art.

Wine Down this Summer…..

At Morgan Creek Vineyards and Winery, summer fun is being taken to a new level. In addition to being open Monday-Saturday from 10:00 am until 6:00 pm for (free!) winery tours and tastings, Morgan Creek is hosting a series of summer events called “Music and Fireworks in the Vineyard.” I attended June 7^th, picnic in hand, to the Vineyard in Harpersville (which is about 25 minutes outside the city), only to be amazed by the number of young professionals, families, sommeliers and friends lounging on the Vineyard’s green. The band Bonus Round played cover songs (ranging from Outkast to John Mayer) all night as attendees enjoyed picnics, the wine tasting tent, tours of the vineyard and barbeque available on the premise. We capped the night off with fireworks and coffee cake (which we brought ourselves!).

July 4^th and August 16^th--Music begins at 6 p.m., fireworks at 9 p.m..

September 20^th –“Grapestomp” 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. There will be a Lucy-Lookalike contest, food, music, old fashioned grape stomping and a grape harvester demonstration.

Just some numbers from the Magic City Brewfest, which took place last weekend at Sloss Furnace. With musical acts like Blue Moon (not the beer), Highwater and Honeybaked, the event was exciting as well as familial. Saturday was sold out—beer lovers were turned away at the door. Sunday was a little more relaxed – despite the rain—as patrons were able to move about the festival freely. There weren’t even significant lines to deal with, despite over 6,000 estimated attendees over the course of the weekend. As I enjoyed the festival with some of my closest friends, I couldn’t help but imagine the headline: Local grassroots organization does good.

Free the Hops, which organizes Magic City Brewfest, is a group working to pass alcohol legislation in Alabama through lobbying as well as educational initiatives: beer tasting, a comprehensive website, and festivals like Brewfest. Although legislation supporting gourmet beers in Alabama has hit a speed bump in recent weeks, fans of Brewfest and Free the Hops showed Birmingham this weekend that their passions aren’t going anywhere.

Hundreds of people came out to the Art Museum on Friday for Art on the Rocks.

It was quite impressive.

As a Birmingham-newbie, I suppose I didn’t comprehend the buzz that Art on the Rocks has created over the last four years—which is striking. The event was a smash.

With a DJ playing hip, culturally diverse music in the Terrace Café and the funk-soul music of the Dynamites lofting from above the sculpture garden , the Birmingham Museum of Art was the only place to be on Friday evening……. until 10 PM, anyhow.

United Way Young Leaders met last Thursday to LIVE UNITED….. or at least launch their grassroots campaign of the same name. On the rooftop of the Kress Building, United Way commenced what could be considered a risk by many—embracing a new direction of their young leaders program, which will now focus on creating a united voice for Young Professionals. Although it rained all day before the event, the sun physically and symbolically came out to shine life on this grassroots movement.

With over 35 Young Professional civic organizations in Birmingham, the YP scene can be hard to navigate, let alone listen to. LIVE UNITED is launching a number of new events as well, including a Live United Book Club, a Coffee Talk series, the LIVE UNITED YouTube challenge, and even a Movie Club. With a united voice, YP’s can take on a number of issues effectively, from politics to policy, sitting on city boards, and exhibiting strength in the workplace.

Who or What Is the J Clyde?

After reading about my affinity for porches, a fellow chamber staffer suggested that I stop by J Clyde after work one day. Intrigued by the sign in the door claiming to have Alabama’s largest covered porch and Birmingham’s best beer selection, I knew I had been directed to a great spot. Located on Cobb Lane, the J. Clyde prides itself on being out of the way, low key, and utterly amiable. With more than 130 beers, the selection is impressive, and on Tuesdays and Thursdays the J Clyde offers half price of all their draft beer

After I got home from my after work exploration of the J Clyde, an old friend called me and asked what I had been up to. I described the afternoon’s discovery and he aptly responded, “So… half price beer, great covered porch, laid back atmosphere…. What you are saying is that you found heaven?”

I had to agree.

I’m not supposed to be an ‘arty’ gal, but this week’s YP events have brought the creative side out in me. The Museum of Art Jr. Patrons had a social gathering at the Matt Jones Gallery April 23^rd, which paired art education with quality, after-work socialization.

Matt Jones and Benn Johnson spoke for a few minutes apiece, with valuable insights. Matt, whose original gallery was located in Tuscaloosa, is not your traditional art aficionado. In fact, he is a retired ‘working musician’ who fell into the art world nearly by chance. His gallery combines a number of styles, assuring everyone can find something they appreciate at the Matt Jones Gallery.

Benn expressed some interesting insight into art—“Art should do one of two things: it should either make you think, or make you feel something,” he proclaimed, a statement which could make even the least sophisticated art observer stop and listen. I spent the rest of the evening appreciating the pieces Matt’s gallery is currently showcasing, most certainly ‘thinking’ and ‘feeling.’

So, there is a general consensus that Birmingham has an image issue. We complain about Birmingham’s potential for greatness, groan about comparisons to Atlanta, and at times, seem to have a severe inferiority complex.

Now, we have an opportunity to change that.

The Convention and Visitors Bureau (along with the Chamber of Commerce, the Birmingham Jefferson Convention Complex, the City of Birmingham, Jefferson County, and Operation New Birmingham) has launched the IN campaign, with aims of utilizing Birmingham native’s favorite parts of the city to attract out of state visitors.

The best part of this campaign is that you get to help.

Instead of complaining about our city, do something about it. Highlight her triumphs and spread the word about her best spots.

Thirsty Thursdays

I am a football fan, a college football fan at that, so it takes quite an occasion to get me to a professional sporting event.

But the Birmingham Barons have done it.

Every Thursday, when the Barons play at Regions Park (formerly the Hoover Met), all beer sells for $1 and Boneless Buffalo Wings go for 20¢ apiece. Tickets start at $6 for general admission.

While the food and drink specials are enough to lure the young in droves, the atmosphere becomes the real attraction. With every young person in the Jefferson County Region at the ballpark, something original occurs: a strange mix of every type of YP begins to combine. Doctors, lawyers, grad students, businessmen, the go-getters, the sports fanatics, social butterflies, Birmingham locals, boomerangers, and transplants all come out for cheap beer and wings.

The variety of the crowd is quite refreshing, and more diverse than any bar or watering hole one will ever encounter. Furthermore, the occasional family or youth makes the environment clean, wholesome, and a great slice of Birmingham Americana.

Enjoying life from the Patio.....

A recurring theme is arising with my friends and our after-hours adventures: we like patios. A lot. Furthermore, we judge a venue on its patio. I would venue that our list of necessities in a restaurant/bar/after-hours gathering location would look something like the following

1) An enjoyable patio—preferably lined with trees

2) Economical food and drink specials

3) Menu variety

4) Actual tastiness

5) Location—close to either work or home

And numbers 3-5 might not even warrant being on such a list given a strong showing on 1 and 2. I would venture to claim that a YP will go out of their way to enjoy a drink on a nice patio.

One of my favorite patios is now Rojo in Highland Park. Not only does Rojo benefit from being happily situated on Rushton Park, but the eclectic mix of YPs, neighborhood locals, and Birmingham natives makes Rojo a fun spot. The park attracts dog-walkers; many even bring their dogs to the patio for dinner, which pleases dog-lovers like me profusely.

With such a quaint glimpse of slower city life, one feels like they are – for a moment—a life-long resident of Highland Park.

A hip spot for cool cats... or monkeys....

An old college friend recently came to visit me from Washington, DC. I happened to spend my summer working in the DC metro area, and came to know his high-rolling social circle and their posh nightlife. My friend has incredibly high expectations, which is why I was … rather surprised at this gushing about Birmingham’s offerings.

Specifically, while waiting for some friends after dinner, we went and sat on the patio at the Blue Monkey and ordered drinks. This particular April night, the weather was impeccable, which made the atmosphere all the more delightful.

“You know, this can rival anything in DC and New York,” he said.

Naturally, my response was… skeptical. However, the Blue Monkey really is an unusual and enchanting spot. I started appreciating some of the little pleasures the watering hole has to offer: situated off Cobb Lane, the cobblestone street is tree filled, giving the aura of a New England/fairytale quaintness. Candle-filled chandeliers hang from the tress on the patio. The drink menu is impressively creative—I tasted a pear martini that was delicious. Inside, comfy couches and chairs fill every spot in the cave-like bar, which consists of multiple rooms and nooks. The Blue Monkey is a place for conversation in a curious atmosphere, so bring a date or a friend when the weather is nice and enjoy— even your friends with particularly discriminatory tastes will appreciate it.

Make a Tail Wag—YP Birmingham’s Humane Event

YP Birmingham and the Shelby County Animal Shelter held a happy hour Wednesday, March 25 at the Wine Loft. If I was undecided about going, all reservations ceased after viewing the Humane Society’s website, complete with pictures of all the puppies available for adoption. One look at the family of black and white beagles and I was sold.

The Wine loft was packed, signaling both the scarcity of YP Birmingham Events in the last few months, and the desire for YP’s to celebrate the coming of spring. Among the door prizes were handbag provided by Doree in SoHo, a necklace and earring set provided by Silver Locket, and a California Pizza Kitchen dinner for two. I heard there was a silent auction (complete with Bromberg’s signature pearls!), but that wasn’t the main purpose of the evening. YP donated the majority of the profits to the Shelby County Humane Society, so a minimal cover charge made me feel like I had accomplished some good that evening.

On my first day of work at the Birmingham Regional Chamber of Commerce, a co-worker gushed about the blog-news site, The Terminal. The dream-child of Andre Natta, The Terminal provides Birmingham-centric news, events, ideas and editorials in a style new to Birmingham. On Friday, we celebrated the terminal’s first birthday.

At the old Chamber of Commerce building on First Avenue North (the current home of Protective Life), Verizon Wireless sponsored a birthday party, complete with Cupcakes from Urban Standard and Hors d’oeuvres from the Bottletree. It was a fitting event—a meeting of minds, just as the Terminal strives to be a meeting of ideas every single day.

Happy Birthday, the Terminal. I look forward to celebrating many more with you in the future.

This Saturday was Rotaract’s Leading a Legacy Gala, benefiting their signature service project, Ready 2 Read. In the words of one of my friends who attended, “I haven’t seen so many tuxes since my senior prom.” Giving back to the community (in this case, Birmingham City Schools) always makes me feel socially invested in the area, but in the form of a gala, service can be sinfully delicious. Literally: there were truffles galore and hors d’oeuvres that would make Wolfgang Puck’s mouth water. Furthermore, the entertainment was superb. The Red Mountain Theatre’s youth performance group, the Preview’s, sang a stunning rendition of “What the Word Needs Now” with Alabama’s Aretha Franklin, Belinda George Peoples. As soon as the performance completed, a screen that had been showing images of Rotaract members in service lifted, to reveal a 19 piece band. The music started, and it was time to dance the night away.

Here’s to Rotaract for showing that community involvement can be incredibly fun and exceedingly fancy.

Instead of bashing art, why don't you Art Bash?

If this weekend’s Art Bash is any indication of the upcoming Magic City Art Connection’s Annual Festival in Linn Park, we are in for a treat. The Art Bash, one of MCAC’s major fundraising efforts for the year, was held on Saturday, and proved to be quite memorable. The warehouse venue ad “Silver Leafed” theme (noting the 25^th anniversary of the organization) gave an undeniable swanky feel to the party, and guests were given the opportunity to purchase local artist’s work at auction. In addition, silver-painted models circulated the room and provided photo opportunities; unfortunately I forgot my camera.

What struck me about the Art Bash was the variety of attendees. Yes, the ‘art crowd’ came to support, but so did the business, young professional, college, and suburban communities. This provided 1) a variety of mingling opportunities and 2) a fun, open and supportive climate. No one in attendance could say they felt out of place. If only I had won the piece I bid on—then the night might have been complete.

Rotaract is combining all that is ‘YP’ into one fantastic event: the Leading the Legacy Gala on March 15, 2008. This must-attend affair supports a great project---

The Cause: Ready to Read.

Ready to Read is Rotaract of Birmingham’s signature service project, providing 30,000 books to over 4,000 students in 150 second grade classrooms across Birmingham City Schools. In addition, Rotaract members will spend over 1,350 hours reading to students each year. Studies show that when books are placed within classrooms, time spent reading increases 60 percent, and Rotaract remains dedicated to improving literacy and education programs in the Birmingham Region.

So how can Rotaract raise funding and awareness for such a great cause?

The Event: Leading a Legacy Gala

Help Rotaract place libraries in every second grade classroom in the Birmingham City School System by dancing the night away on the stage of the historic Alabama Theatre! The evening will feature performances from The Previews of The Red Mountain Theatre, surprise guests, an open bar, heavy hors d'oeuvres, and sounds of a sensational 19-piece big band. The Gala is black-tie optional for men and cocktail attire for ladies. Tickets are $40 individual $75 couple, but after March 1 tickets will increase to $50 and $95 accordingly. The Tapas Tradition

For lunch the other day, a co-worker of mine suggested a spot in Five Points, La Mesa Grill and Cantina. Thinking I was agreeing to Mexican food, I was happy to go….

However, La Mesa (translation, ‘The Table”), has a distinctly Spanish influence which can mean only one thing.

Tapas.

After our delicious endeavor, I thought the benefits of such small plates should be pointed out.

1) Eat as much (or as little) as you want: this is perfect for those slight girls who often insist on ‘just a salad,’ or hearty boys who might order 4 plates. It’s flexible!

2) Variety: I often choose dishes based on the variety I see on my plate; with tapas, you can actually choose and design that variety!

3) Experience new things without ruining your entire plate: I regularly want to try new things, but don’t want to waste an entire meal (or the money spent on that meal) on something that might be disastrous. Tapas restaurants enable you to try new as well as tried and true dishes. It can be a safety net.

4) Picking and choosing everything you want: If there seems to be an interesting entrée, but the side items that accompany such dishes look …well… unappetizing, I am often deterred. Or vice versa. I have been known to order dishes based solely upon mashed potatoes accompanying them. The art of tapas enables you to design your perfect meal. That option is a sure hit.

For future cocktail parties (and to impress dates), the history of tapas dishes should be noted as well. It was rumored that King Alfonso the Wise was ill and began eating small dishes, rather than large meals, during his recovery. Later, he ordered such small dishes be served with alcohol to legitimize drinking. Tapas eventually evolved into a practical measure—while dinking sherry, pieces of bread were used to cover glasses in-between sips to avert the flies (the word ‘tapas’ actually drives from the Spanish work ‘to cover’). Now, the ‘tapas tradition’ has sensible uses again. In European culture, dinner is often served after 9 or 10 PM, and people often go out and socialize at the end of the day. Tapas dishes serve as both as some thing to hold you over until dinner and a way to soak up alcohol, since dinner is so late.

Although this is not meant to be a restaurant review, I will note that we tried the Black Bean Hummus w/ Sweet Corn Relish, Spinach Con Queso with Pico de Gallo, Chorizo & Queso Empanadillas and the Jalapeno Mac and Cheese at La Mesa Grill and Cantina. All were fantastic.

I've been hearing about the Justin Brogdon Band out of Atlanta for weeks, and finally they have come to Birmingham. See the Justin Brogdon Band and the Last Waltz Ensemble (a tribute to Bob Dylan and the Band) at Zydeco, 10 p.m., Friday February 29th. Advanced tickets are $10.00 and $12.00 day of show. The Rules of Twist and Shout

As a young professional, a recent Birmingham transplant and a fresh college graduate, I find the task of Birmingham night life somewhat daunting. I don’t want to find a hot spot that is full of underage college kids sporting fake IDs, but I don’t want a location full of creepy ‘old guys’ or skeezy transplants.

Enter Twist and Shout.

In Five Points on Highland Avenue, Twist and Shout is a dueling piano bar full of flavor and comprised of a unique crowd. On all of my visits, the average Twist and Shout attendee is either a recent college graduate (within the last 3 ½ years) or a local graduate student. Furthermore, if you went to college or high school in Alabama, you know someone at Twist and Shout. I promise.

The attraction of a dueling piano bar is distinctive. It possesses the feel of live music without the price tag (cover is nearly always $5), and provides a focal point for your visit. The music is general enough that everyone in your group will find themselves singing along (there is always a stunning rendition of “You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling” and the night always concludes with…. You guessed it…. “Twist and Shout”), and yet there is no pressure to dance, thus making your male counterparts feel awkward.

Twist and Shout has the feeling of an intimate hangout where everyone knows your name with a piano bar flair, ensuring a toe-tapping, oldies belting good time.

An Introduction and Art!

In this new generation of business approaches and media outlets, the Birmingham Regional Chamber of Commerce realizes that we have an unlimited number of opportunities available to us—and perhaps it is time to take advantage of those prospects. Enter: The YP Scene—a blog specifically about Young Professionals, their organizations, and all that the Birmingham scene has to offer them. Although I will attempt to keep the content of this column varied, I need your help! If you have an event, a meeting, or opportunity you want blogged about, let me know! Although I might be the last person in Birmingham to partake, I experienced my first Sips n’ Strokes last night. Granted, I moved to the area only two months ago, however, even before my relocation I heard about Wendy Lovoy’s entrepreneurial masterpiece. Word travels fast among artsy, wine loving young professionals. If you have been under a rock this last year, Sips n’ Strokes is a step-by-step art class in which you bring whatever beverage you please and take home a hip piece of art of your own making. Bottle openers, plastic cups and drinking water are available at all four locations, and the vendor provides all the necessary materials: paint, palette, canvas, paintbrushes (you get four! Don’t worry, they tell you which ones to use at the appropriate times, although I cheated a little bit) and even smocks. At Lovoy’s website, a calendar of the available classes and their respective paintings makes it easy to place reservations (although they are not required) and get your friends to come along.

Last night, the crowd was relatively fresh, but excited to create, and the instructors were friendly and easy to follow. However, I was surprised at the number of men in the audience. Granted, they brought Heineken rather than chardonnay, but none of them complained about being dragged by female friends or companions. That’s when I realized: this is the perfect place for a first, second, or even fifteenth date! Guys: you take a girl to something she genuinely wants to do (and seem a gentleman in the process), create something of your own, and go through an experience together! Furthermore, if the date is a dud, it’s easy to cover up awkward silences with paying attention to the instructor.

We painted the “Kissitini,” and although I was skeptical of my artistic abilities, I must admit, even a Chamber staffer with two left hands can make a good looking canvas. And although I didn’t believe it, the instructors were right about two things: it looks a lot better the next day over a cup of coffee and some pride, and if not, no one ever looks that close anyhow.
